nathan fake and wesley matsell are both producers best known for their releases on border community - nathan fake has been putting out psychedelic permutations on dance music since 2003 for the label, while matsell recently released the blissful total order of being ep for them earlier in 2014. cambria instruments is a new label venture from the pair, and for the first release they have teamed up for a split 12- of kaleidoscopic electronic sounds. nathan fake s contribution black drift starts things off, an initially inauspicious tripping beat gathering momentum and morphing into a far-out piece of fuzzy house underpinned by sunken low-end rumbles. it s the kind of brilliantly wide-eyed track we have come to expect from the producer. over on the flip, wesley matsell s bismuth is a more shadowy, moody affair, a tight techno rhythm holding things together while synths spin wildly. a highly expressive, lysergic trip and one of his finest productions to date. all in all, you couldn t hope for a stronger start from a new label.

around7 follows up his two laidback funk/jazz albums for robsoul jazz with his first ever venture into house music. his double crossing ep released through the main robsoul recordings imprint on 4th april 2014. the parisian, who previously delivered the back to basics and soul on wire lps to critical acclaim, continues his production style of sampling complemented by live, organic sounds. producer influences such as j dilla and dj premier continue to be in evidence, alongside the jazz of miles davis, bill evans and the legendary blue note records, all given a 4/4 twist.the result is four stripped back tracks with a low slung, smoky atmosphere, packed pull of acoustic sounds and live instrumentation. those who remember joss moogs early outings on robsoul will also find parallels here around7s music career began as a bassist and trumpet player in a jazz/funk band. after learning to play keyboard and discovering the akai mpc sampler and software such as cubase, he merged all of his skills together to create his own tracks based around live instrumentation and samples.

emotional especial gathers pace with an eighth release from richard sen, a man whose cultured touch has had a hand in various strands of the uk underground for the past two decades. graffiti artist, graphic designer, music curator, dj and producer are all vocations richard sen has done at one point or another. here he goes solo with the ghost train ep, a dark and brooding release of old school meets new school house jack that takes its cues from 80s new york, italian house and the nascent uk acid house that sen himself documented with aplomb on a 2012 compilation for strut. naggingly familiar samples and a low slung box jam groove drive the spectral title cut forward, whilst sens mastery of delay is shown with aplomb on the dub version that closes out the record. nestled in between is the highlight however in *meteor shower* where discoid basslines merge with psychedelically charged keys and hollowed out steppers percussion.
